One of the best games on the DS December 5, 2008 KM (England) 174 out of 179 found this review helpful
I completely agree with all of the positive reviews on here and would like to also highly recommend this game as it is amazing. If you imagine a point-and-click murder mystery in the style of the classic Broken Sword or the more recent Phoenix Wright games and mix it with the puzzle elements of the best selling Brain Training games, then you will have some idea what to expect here.
Don't expect an easy game here though as even the puzzles early on take a lot of thinking about and will have you clicking on the Hints button! Most puzzles are solved by using just common sense and the answer will suddenly click and you'll be kicking yourself for not seeing it before. As well as some truly brain-teasing puzzles, there are also some of the best videos - with full spoken audio - that I have seen on the DS and it all adds to the story and will make you want to keep playing to solve the mystery.
Overall this is without a doubt one of the best games on the DS and is one that everyone will enjoy regardless of your age or gender. Just be prepared to get addicted to it!
Curiouser and curiouser! September 7, 2008 Peabrain (UK) 119 out of 128 found this review helpful
I was told about Professor Layton by a family member. At first I didn't think I was going to enjoy it but before I knew it, I was hooked! Some of the challenges were easy but others certainly got the grey cells working and what's more, other members of the family got involved in the challenges too! The graphics are great, and the game has mini movie clips throughout.
I've played "Phoenix Wright" but in my opinion "Professor Layton" is streets ahead in terms of all-round player experience - interaction, enjoyment and challenging!
It was sad when the challenges were coming to end but I was pleased to learn that additional weekly challenges could be downloaded -yippee!!
I can't wait for the next game - Professor Layton and Pandora's box - to be released and there's a third game in development too.
puzzle-tastic! October 19, 2008 K. Morris (Perth, Scotland) 222 out of 240 found this review helpful
I can honestly say this is one of the best games I have played for the DS. It is suited for puzzle fans - there are a LOT of puzzles to solve, some quite straight forward but there are a lot of taxing ones. I'll admit I was naughty and referred to an online FAQ more than once! It has a nice story, lots of quirky characters, different locations to look around as well. Once you complete certain bits you unlock bonuses. Great fun and although I've finished it I will definetly play it again.
You *have* to own this - it's fab! August 8, 2008 elsie (Manchester, UK) 125 out of 138 found this review helpful
A brilliant game - it's about time it was released in the UK - I had to get our copy from the US!
Having played some of my kids other DS games recently I was appalled at the poor quality of the graphics and interface of them (Tangram Mania in particular). But this game is far superior, being of much higher quality and kept my interest as an adult as much as it did my 8 year old daughter. I sincerely hope that they bring out a Professor Layton 2 game very soon as I was hooked and was very sad to complete the game! The puzzles can be tough and so I would only recommend it for age 8 and above.
Enjoy brain teasers? Love this game! November 3, 2008 Ms. N. Nottingham 35 out of 39 found this review helpful
I have recently completed this game and loved every step of it
Apart from the odd puzzle which has the wrong answer (I think there's 2 out of the 100 odd in the game) the game is perfect: Wonderful graphics, excellent story line, and lots of puzzels!
You start by solving simple ones, like matching shapes to shadows, and go right up to the ones like "A farmer has a wolf, a chicken, and a bag of seed, he wants to transport them across the river on his raft that will only hold himself and one of the items/animals, what order must he take them over the river in" with plenty of sliding, liquid and number puzzles on the way.
The puzzles aren't boring either with the vast majority being "animated" so you actually complete them on screen, rather than having to have a pen and paper handy. You can also write on the touchscreen for the "worded" puzzles, no marks for showing your working out though! You do also get a set amount of hints and tried for each one, but there's no time limits on them, which is good for me with the sliding ones, never had the nack for those!
I found it great fun, especially with the ones you get stuck on and end up asking your family, then your friends, then your aunts uncles and cousins twice removed!
The story is entertaining and somehow relavent to the array of puzzles! Its wonderfully done.
I would advise this to anyone who's played and enjoyed games like Brain Training, or even RPG Puzzle Games like "The Longest Journey", "Sam and MAx", "Day of the Tentacle", or the "Monkey Island" Trilogy, as long as you enjoy the puzzle side of it of course.
I WOULD NOT ADVISE THIS TO ANYONE WHO USES A CHEAT OR WALKTHROUGH. It ruins the game!
Also, for anyone who's completed it, you can download extra puzzels with a WIFI connection, just to keep you going til the sequel!
